La dyspareunie : Comment la définir et la traiter

Dyspareunia: How to define and treat it

According to the WHO, pain during intercourse, or dyspareunia, affects at least 20% of women and yet we talk about it (too!) little.

As part of Womanology's approach to highlighting women's intimate pain , today we are addressing dyspareunia and the solutions that exist to manage it.

dyspareunia

Dyspareunia: what is it?

Dyspareunia corresponds to pain felt just before, during or after sexual intercourse, in the genital region. It causes sensations of burning, throbbing, cramps, spasms, etc.

Pain can be...

  • Superficial : pain felt at the entrance to the vagina, at the start of penetration
  • Deep : pain in the cervix or lower abdomen, which occurs during deep vaginal penetration and is more intense in certain sexual positions, and with certain partners.

Characterized according to the period of appearance:

  • Primary : the person feels pain from their first sexual intercourse
  • Secondary : pain occurs later in sexual life

It is either:

  • Permanent : pain during each sexual intercourse.
  • Intermittent : only occurs at certain times, with certain partners or in certain positions.

Suffering during sex is never normal, and it is important to understand the cause.

Some possible causes…

Dyspareunia, regardless of its nature, can have various causes such as:

Infections Like genital infections, such as yeast infections or sexually transmitted infections.

Pathologies such as vulvodynia , vulvar lichen sclerosus , endometriosis, uterine fibroids or even chronic bladder disease.

Anatomical problems Birth defects of the genitals or scars from previous surgery, such as a cesarean section.

Psychological disorders Stress, anxiety, sexual trauma or even relational or emotional problems.

Lack of lubrication Vaginal dryness due to hormonal fluctuations, for example during menopause or breastfeeding.

Medication Side Effects Certain medications, such as those used to treat depression, high blood pressure, or allergies, may contribute to dyspareunia.

It is important to consult a healthcare professional to determine the specific cause of dyspareunia, as treatment may vary depending on the cause.

  • Gynecologist
  • Sexologist
  • Midwife

What support ?

Here are some possible solutions:

Tecartherapy

Tecartherapy is a technology that stimulates exchanges between cells using high-frequency current, which improves the body's natural self-repair mechanisms.

This helps relieve pain , tension and accelerate the healing process. This involves placing a probe on the area. The process is not painful but slightly heats the skin.

Use of local intimate care

INTIMA RESCUE , our 4 in 1, 100% natural treatment oil with patented active ingredients is particularly recommended to relieve dyspareunia thanks to its anti-inflammatory, anti-pain and healing properties.

Self-massage

Self-massage of the pelvic region, with an oil, helps relax muscles , improve blood circulation and reduce tension that can contribute to pain during sexual intercourse. This solution first requires the advice of a health professional , who will give you all the necessary advice for good practice.

Sexual comfort rings

It is an accessory designed to support people suffering from pain during penetration. The flexible rings are placed at the base of the penis or the vibrator . This is intended to produce a “bumper” effect to adjust the depth and to avoid pain associated with penetration. It is recommended to lubricate the accessory for greater comfort.

Using a lubricant

Using a lubricant during sex can help reduce friction and discomfort and make it more peaceful.

Psychological and/or sexological support

Psychological care in dyspareunia is essential , because these pains can be caused or exacerbated by psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma or relationship problems.

It is important to emphasize that psychological care must be complemented by medical care , to ensure that there are no physical causes underlying sexual pain.

How to help treat dyspareunia?

The partner plays an essential role in the management and treatment of dyspareunia. Here are some examples:

  1. Emotional support : The partner can provide emotional support to the person with dyspareunia by listening to their feelings, building trust, and expressing support and understanding. Acknowledging the problem and showing empathy can help relieve the stress and anxiety related to dyspareunia.
  2. Open communication : Open and honest communication is essential when dealing with dyspareunia. The partner can encourage the person concerned to express their feelings, concerns and needs. It can also help resolve any mutual misunderstandings or frustrations.
  3. Participation in the search for solutions : The partner can support the person suffering from dyspareunia in the search for solutions, such as consulting a health professional specializing in sexual health or carrying out certain exercises or treatments recommended. Actively participating in this search for solutions can help strengthen the feeling of mutual support and commitment.
  4. Adaptation of sexual practices : The partner can help adapt sexual practices to minimize the pain associated with dyspareunia. This may include changing positions, prolonged foreplay, using lubricants, or other methods to increase comfort during sex.
  5. Patience and understanding : Dyspareunia can be frustrating and lead to reduced sexual pleasure for both partners. The partner can be patient and understanding, adjusting expectations and being willing to explore other forms of physical or emotional intimacy when penetration is difficult or painful.

Do not hesitate to consult a health professional to find out all the possible solutions depending on the cause of your dyspareunia . A good understanding of pain can lead to more appropriate treatment.
